Unpopular Rich and Educated Man in the Town
Unpopular Rich and Educated Man in the Town
- R.B. Thohe Pou
Who knows you may be one of the richest and educated men in the town. But you may no know ?" you are the most unpopular educated or rich man in the town until you over- heard from some one talking in the tea stall. I was shocked to learn that Mr. Shamee John is a very rich and educated person but every one in this town dislikes him. He is such a rich and educated person and I can?Tt understand why people dislike him in many aspects. Every time he comes to our home town, people talk only his negative aspects; it seems he is the only person in the town who has done nothing good for the town. Why every one in the town does not recognize his riches and high degree that he had earned? We must respect such an educated and rich person in this town. Oh I really can?Tt understand why people are against him. He hardly comes to our home town; only few people keep in touch with him but why everyone knows and dislikes him?
Many people may talk against him and dislike him but I respect him as he is rich and well educated person. For some years I keep questioning myself, ?oWhy this people dislike him instead of having pride to have such a rich and well educated person in their town?? One day when I met Mr. Kompee James during one of the seminars, he told me the whole story, ?oSee you came to this town only 2-3 years back but you must be aware of all those development coming to our town. Well, who has brought all these development in our town? Do you think that all the rich and educated people contribute something for the development in our town?? ?oWhen we need money urgently for our Town Community Hall building, we went to many people for help. We have contacted all the rich men in our town. But there were only a few rich men who came forward to help us in building this Town Community Hall. Infact, we were expecting some contribution from all the rich men for our Hall building.?
Then I asked him again, ?oBut why you people dislike this particular rich and educated person?? He narrated me further, ?oYou see there are some more rich people like him in our town and most of them invested their money in our home town. But you know this rich chap has not a single penny that has invested in our home town. As we compare to other rich people here, he is richer than any one here in this town. When we need money, he refused to lend us money; when we seek intellectual help; he had flatly rejected on pretends of his heavy schedule in his own office and other personal work. Last year there was also a seminar on ?oIntellectuality and Economic Development?. He was one of the main speakers in our Seminar. But he did not come to the seminar even after his confirmation and program were printed out. What kind of intellectuality and richness he has got that will benefit for us society??
The people in the town want and expect that such kind of rich people to invest some money in our town. They should also contribute their knowledge for their society so that the young generation also may learn from them. But he is good only for himself and for his family. Mr. Kompee James narrated me further, ?oI have also learnt from some reliable source i.e. from one of his friends in the city that he is also unhelpful to his friends and people around him. If he is not even helpful to his friends and people surrounding him, how can we expect now to contribute his intellects and richness to our society? He has every right to do with his intellects and richness then why are we so disturb and dislike him? It is rightly said, ?oMan is a social animal? and we love to live a community life. But today due to advance in science and technology and many other advances; people are becoming more individualistic. But it never means that one can live alone happily without having good environment, friends or the society.? He continues to narrate and gave comparison on those people who are not very rich and educated like him and he said that there are some people in the town who are highly esteem for their valuable contribution for the society in the town even though they are no rich and well educated like him.
After interacting with Mr. Kompee James, I have many questions that arise in me. Here I came to learn that the people in the town expect every rich and educated people to contribute something good for the society. Many of us may ignore what Mr. Kompee James has narrated to me, but I think we may need to ponder what we are contributing for our society in our town or for our society. Are we educated and rich? If we are not rich like other people in the town, are we educated and knowledgeable person who can contribute something good for the society? If we are not rich and highly educated like others, what we can contribute for our society? In which field we can contribute for our society? Do the people give respect and trust only those people who contribute something beneficial for the society?
The question came spontaneously to my mind and I continue to ask many more questions to myself? why the rich and educated people who have not contributed for the society are snubbed in the society? What make the rich and educated people ignore their own society or town? Do we need to contribute something for the society to be recognized by our society? Are we now living in an individualistic society? Why do we need to consider the other persons in the same society or town? I have got many more questions to be asked. When I try to answer some of those questions, I have got some answers but there are many questions that I can?Tt be answered instantly. So as you read this article, you may continue to raise more questions and ponder yourself and bring the best result for yourself to decide.

Free and Fair Election in Nagaland
The time has come for the Nagas to decide whom to elect. It is the high time for the Nagas to vote for the right party in Nagaland. If the people vote for the wrong party, the Naga people will suffer for a long period of five years. When you enjoy your life with peace and prosperity, you do not know how the year passes. But in suffering, one year seems to be like one decade. Once again the Naga underground have assured not to involve in State election. They may need the trust of the Naga people. Shall we trust them? We cannot evaluate the right party from the viewpoint of central government. The BJP or Congress may do an excellent task in the center. But when it comes to State, the ground reality is difference. Not all the BJP or Congress ruling party in center is good or bad. It depends on the ruling party (leaders) in the state and the people of the state only know their ace political leaders. The influence of the central government leaders and threat from different Naga factions in Nagaland should not be affected to the public to vote the right party in Nagaland election. It is the high time for the Nagas to vote for the right party who will serve and work for the development of the state. Nagaland State receives very high annual budget from the central government every year and it should be reached to the grass root level. The different factions of the Nagas may threaten the public and canvass to vote for their own choice. But the public should vote for the right party that would suite for the Nagas to run the Nagaland State peacefully. If the people vote the wrong party (leader) due to threat by different factions, the future of the Nagas is very dark; we can expect in the future only bloods and skulls. We considered that the Nagas are in this modern world leaving all the ancient feuds of headhunting. But today the situation of ground reality is resembled to those days of headhunting. Many candidates in Nagaland were happy as the Naga underground had assured that they would not involve in the forthcoming state election. However some of the candidates are suspicious because the underground had involved earlier in last election even after their Press Release assuring not to involve in state election. When you make New Year resolutions and break it within a month it shows only human weaknesses. But promising not to involve in election and getting involve in election canvassing shows no dignity and integrity of the organization. If the Naga undergrounds would have keep silent and do not promise that they would not involve in State Election, the common people or Naga leaders might have not been annoyed. But involving in the State Election after promising not to involve in State Election shows their hypocrisy and restrict the free and fair election. It seems the Naga underground were compelled not to involve in State Election and they seem gave a Press Release promising not to involve in State Election. But why do we need to make a promise when we break it intentionally? Will you arrest the voters on the day of casting vote or will you give them the right to cast their vote? Let the Naga people trust in your promises or assurances. The Nagas underground involving in State Election through muscle power is giving a very bad reputation in recent years. Who will against you for involving in State Election if you would have not assured that you would not involve in State Election? You have got every right to involve in State election like any other Naga. If you want to involve in Indian sponsored politics, no one can stop you but compromising its principle by participating in the election conducted under the Indian constitution may show your true color. We the Nagas seriously need to practice what we preach and write. If we dont want to practice what we preach and write, we should be a silent spectator in every aspect of our life. It is injudicious to fool ourselves by losing the trust of others. It would be wiser to loss your candidates by winning the trust of the people than winning your candidates by losing the people trust on you. For many years the Nagas suffered due to inter-tribe and village headhunting. Under the British colonization, the Nagas again suffered. After the British rule, the Indian government subdued the Nagas and the Indian armies harassed the Nagas in many aspects. However the worst threat to the Naga people now is the internal threat and problem. We need to evaluate the past ruling party what they have done for the Nagas. Also we need to see the prospect for the new government to be formed after the election. We the Nagas need a strong leader who can lead the Nagas in the right track to solve the long pending Indo-Naga problem. The present Assembly election in Nagaland may help the development, peace and unity in Nagaland. We have got every right to vote the right candidate without intervention from the factional groups. As we live under one of the biggest democracy countries in the world let the entire world know and learn from Nagaland through a fair and free election. Voting for a candidate with gun point and money power will deteriorate and elevate the present problem in Nagaland. In this modern society the dictatorship philosophy to subdue with muscle power is obsolete. Let there be fair and free election in Nagaland. Let us pray and work with broad-mind for the welfare of the Nagas as a whole and not only for the benefit of an individual or a particular faction. Let the people decide and vote their right candidate for the right party to have a better government and peace in Nagaland after the election.

NE students under attack
New Delhi, February 16 (MExN): In the latest case of racial discrimination against the northeastern people, a Manipuri girl was molested by six men while three boys from Arunachal Pradesh were severely assaulted in separate incidents in the capital city of India.
A graduate girl from Manipur was molested by 6 men on the evening of February 15 at around 7 pm at Kotla, informed the North East Support Centre & Helpline (NESC&H) in a press release issued by its spokesman, Madhu Chandra. However, Chandra stated that with the help from Manipur Students Association Delhi, the victim lodged an FIR at Kotla Mubarak police station against the six accused. Police arrested one of the accused and is scheduled to be produce in Patiala Court some time today, added Chandra. Meanwhile, the NESC&H also informed that three boys from Arunachal Pradesh, who went to lodge a complaint at the local Air Tel vendor for some work, were threatened by the local Air Tel vendor and beaten severely along with 25 local boys. The victims suffer serious injuries by knife at stomach and beaten by latten weapons like iron rode, wooden stick and bamboos. Victims are admitted in Ram Rohia Hospital, said Madhu Chandra, the NESC&H Spokesman. The release said that the NESC&H fact-finding team rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. However, the release expressed displeasure at the police personnel who, according to the release, were present at the spot of the incident and did not take any steps to stop the mob from beating the victims. In this regard, the NESC&H sought the intervention from police and government machineries to stop the racial discrimination meted out to the north east people. The law of the land should be available to all citizens, irrespective of regional and racial. The offenders must be prosecuted as per as the law of the land. The suffering communities must be protected, said Chandra. The NESCH further said that racial discrimination to North East people has become wide spread in national capital in recent times, especially after the Mail Today tabloid on January 28, carried a racial and vulgar story, leveling all north eastern girls as drug peddlers who offer sex.

Valentine's Day Gifts
| Valentine's Day Gifts | | By: R.B. Thohe Pou * |
Every year many people celebrated Valentine's Day with their loved ones. But many of us know little about the St. Valentine's Day. There are different legends about the origin of Valentine's Day. One legend stated that Valentine was a priest who served during in third century in Rome. And he was put to death because he defied Emperor Claudius II's decree and continuing to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Another legend suggested that he fell in love with a young girl, probably the daughter of jailer's daughter who used to visit him in the prison. It is believed that he wrote a letter to her, which he signed as "From your Valentine", an ex-pression that is still use today. Around 498 AD Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as St. Valentine's Day. In France and England, Feb.14 is the beginning of bird's mating season and the idea came to the people that middle of February should be a day for romance.
In Great Britain, V-day celebration starts in 17th century and it became common for friends and lovers to exchange small token of love or handwritten notes. By the end of 18th century, printed cards replaced with written letters. In America, handmade valentines used in early 1700s, and started the printed card in 1840s. About the Valentine's Day is vague, but the stories emphasis his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and importantly a romantic figure. In 17th century, Valentine's Day is not only means for the lovers or couples but exchange of small token of affection or handwriting notes among the friends and others. But for many people in India, Valentine's Day mean only for the lovers or couples because we celebrate Mother's, Father's, Raksha Bandhan and Friendship's day in other days. Whatever it may be - Valentine's day is a day you can express your loved ones - your parents, siblings, friends and all those who matters.
Many people save money to get the most expensive gifts for their loved one on V-day. The Shiv Sena and VHP opposed the V-day to celebration as it is a culture imported from foreign soil but they don't oppose to give the gifts to their loved one in India. The V-day was not celebrated in early days in India but the essence and concept of V-day was there before the V-day being celebrated in India. Love and gift is common to every country but not to V-day celebration. There is love and everyone possesses love but only V-day is set part as a special day to express love to his or her loved ones. In every country, there is mixed culture and V-day is celebrated every year - whether in an ordinary or special way, except in some orthodox countries where there is restriction of practicing the foreign cultures.
This year how will you celebrate and what will be your gifts to your loved one? Is it necessary to buy a gift to express your love to some one? What is the best way to express your love - a small gift with big love or an expensive big gift with little love? V-day is only a special day set part from other days but it never means that there should not be love in other days. On this V-day, it is the time for the different companies - from Pepsi to Dior to Corum to earn a big money by producing different love gift packages. But for the Valentinians, it is the time to spend in purchasing the costly gifts for their loved one.
For many people love is blind totally blind and expresses their love with an expensive gift, which is beyond their capacity (budget) to purchase the gifts. In today's materialistic world, many people see the price of the gifts and only few people value highly the small gift and see the heart of the givers. Have you ever received any gift and snubbed the gift because the price of the gift is cheap? Some time, the price of the gift may be cheap but there is heart in that gift, which is costlier than the costliest gift that you received form some one without any heart in it.
There are many V-day gifts articles available from Archies shop (small gifts) to Corum (big gifts) There are many V-day gifts available ranging from Rs.100 (or below) to 532,000 Let's me tell you what some of my friends are going to purchase the gifts and do on this Valentine's Day. Some people think that they should buy an expensive gift on this V-day while the other thinks that it is not necessary to give an expensive gift for their loved one to show their love. One of my friend's names Mr. Keishing wants to purchase the Pepsi 'Love Wrap' from Delhi. Pepsi 'Love Wrap'- where his love messages will be printed on customized labels of 500-ml Pepsi bottle with Roses.
One stem of roses cost Rs.1,000/-. Another friend of mine Ms Pounai wants to get a suitcase-Panache as a gift for her boy friend- who loves to travel around the world. The price of Panache would be around Rs 3500-4500. Mr. Alemchiba wants to get a watch from Luxury watchmaker Christian Dior for his girl friend. Dior Girly watch is between Rs 30,500 to 44,000. There is also a scheme with that watch that anyone who buys the watch will get a free Candle light meal with Moet Hennessy Champagne in a Five Star restaurant some where in Delhi or Mumbai.
A friend of mine whose father is a Cabinet minister thinks that the best way to express his genuine love to his girl friend is giving the most expensive gifts available for the Valentine's Day. So he would be getting a 'Trapeze pink watch' from Corum. The price of Trapaze is Rs 532,000. All of my friends who have got girl friend and boy friends want to buy the best gifts for their loved one but what about the Singles? The Singles are also has something special for them. On this V-day the single yuppie friends of mine like Ms Chang, Leiyation, Asenla, Kevi and Nepuni have something special from Taj Group. The hotel Taj Group Goa has planned a range of activities to keep the singles fully occupied. These include icebreaker activities, Meditation programs, Swimming competition, Poolside and beach side activities, cocktail making etc.
Whether you are in India or foreign country- you are in city or countryside, love is in the air. Whether you celebrate V-day or not- you buy small or big gift-love is in the air. Whether it is V-day special gift or any other special or ordinary gifts-the most important aspects in gifts are not the price of gifts but the heart of the people or gift itself. Gift is something special that man cannot give easily without heart in it. We need to give gifts with our heart and receive with our sincere heart. A truthful rejection of gift is better than accepting without acceptance from the heart. A small gift with lots of love is better than the costliest gift without any love or heart. So express your love with gifts and accept the gifts with love.

Delhi remains unsafe for women from northeast
Wednesday, 09 January , 2008
New Delhi: Almost half the women sexually harassed in the Indian capital and its neighbourhood are from the northeast, says the Northeast Support Centre. Two sisters from Manipur who were molested and beaten up last weekend were only the latest victims from the region. Madhu Chandra, the man behind the Northeast Support Centre and Helpline, a help centre dedicated to youth from the northeast living in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), said they were flooded with complaints related to sexual harassment.
"It's been just three months since we launched the Northeast Support Centre and we have received more than 10 reports of sexual harassment," Chandra told IANS. "From what we have researched and according to media reports, we have found that nearly 50 per cent of the cases of sexual harassment are targeted at women from the northeast." The Delhi-NCR region has nearly 85,000 people from the northeast. More than 4,000 northeastern youth take admission to various undergraduate and other courses in Delhi University every year. Chandana Saikia from Assam who graduated from Delhi University and is now working in a public relations firm in the capital said that even after seven years of staying in this city, she didn't feel safe or secure. "Every other day we keep hearing of cases of molestation and sexual harassment in Delhi. Although I take all of this in my stride, my parents back at home are always worried and give me panic calls if they can't get through my phone," Saikia told IANS. "But despite giving everyone an impression that nothing scares me, I am always on my guard. Even after seven years of staying in the capital, I don't feel at home here," she added. Similarly, Lara Subba from Manipur, who lives with her friend in north Delhi, said she doesn't feel secure in the capital at all and constantly feels threatened. "The other day I and my friend were coming in a rickshaw when two men started following us, calling us 'chinkies' and passing lewd remarks. Scared, I started screaming at the top of my voice, which made them change their route," Subba said. "Just because we look different and wear more Western outfits, people think that they can take us for granted. That's why we usually stick together, with people from our own community." In May 2005, a 19-year-old Delhi University student from the northeast was raped by four men in a moving car after dragging her from a roadside eatery in south Delhi's Dhaula Kuan area. The sensational case made headlines for days. In September last year, there was a huge outcry when three northeastern girls were molested in the Delhi University campus. Then in December, the Northeast Support Centre received a complaint from a girl from Manipur working as a receptionist in a private company in Gurgaon that her boss molested her in the office. Similarly, a minor northeastern girl in Gurgaon is still suffering after she was molested three times in December by her house owner. Ranjana Kumari, director of the Centre for Social Research and president of Women Power Connect (WPC), said this issue is more prevalent in the northern belt because of the mindset of the men. "In the northern belt, the mindset is such that the men believe they can control women physically. That's why they can't stand the freedom of sexuality that men and women in the northeast enjoy," Kumari said. "There's no way out of this problem but for women to take charge of these issues. In this regard, we will be observing a National Shame day across the country, hopefully coinciding with the Women's day March 8, to tell people that women must be respected." D C Srivastava, the deputy commissioner of police, north Delhi, however, said that in the past year-and-a-half, they have registered just two cases of sexual harassment against northeastern women. "The number of such cases is not that high," he said. The reason for this, according to Chandra, is that victims of sexual or any other kind of harassment hesitate to lodge an official complaint with the police. "Staying so far away from home and not wanting to get into any complicated situation, most complainants who come to us hesitate to approach the police and lodge a first information report (FIR)," Chandra said. "When we tell them that we are not here to replace the police, but help facilitate smoother communication with them, they leave the case at that. That's why most of the crimes go unreported and the accused goes scot-free. This is a major hurdle that we are facing," Chandra said.

Thoughts of the Day 30
Continue from Quotations 29: 1. No matter whether you read newspaper, magazine, novels, dictionary, bible, textbook or anything else but do not crave to sleep, footle, gossip and ramble because these things will bring you poverty. 2. No man is born to be what he is today. But his attitude and character molded him what he is today. 3. Nothing is free in this world. Even a heartfelt gift needs to be paid.
